Somerset coroner seeking 5th term

Dave Sutor

— Wallace Miller has quietly consoled mourners as a funeral director and spoken in the national spotlight as Somerset County’s coroner.

He and other members of the department worked at the United Airlines Flight 93 crash site near Shanksville after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Their performance gained Miller accolades from organizations and individuals across the country.

He also operates Miller Funeral Home and Crematory in Somerset and Rockwood, where he has dealt with countless grieving loved ones.

Though those roles might seem different, Miller finds a common link: “I always try to remember that the (deceased) is somebody’s favorite person,” he said.

Miller is seeking the opportunity to continue in his role as coroner.

He officially announced his candidacy for a fifth term last week. He will run on the Republican ballot in the May 21 primary.

“I think I would like to keep doing it,” Miller said. “I’m young. I have a lot of energy. I think I’m well-suited for the job.”

Miller is a member of the Pennsylvania DUI Association, Pennsylvania Homicide Investigators Association and Travelers Protective Association. He was a charter member and organizer of the Somerset County Child Death Review Team.
