Storms sapping blood supply

— Because winter storms in several parts of the country have taken a toll on American Red Cross blood collections this month, officials are urging residents of regions not as severely impacted to donate blood at area blood drives.

The Red Cross has the ability to move blood products where and when they are needed most, so donors in unaffected areas are being encouraged to make and keep blood and platelet donation appointments to help offset the shortfall.

While all blood types are needed, the Red Cross urges eligible donors with types O positive, O negative, A negative and B negative blood to make an appointment.

Platelets also are badly needed because they have a shelf life of five days and must be replenished regularly.

Blood donation collections are scheduled for the following times and sites:

Today: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Conemaugh Lee Campus, 320 Main St., Johnstown, and 1 to 7 p.m., Hooversville Community Building, Main Street.

Friday: Noon to 6 p.m., Johnstown Blood Donor Center, 250 Jari Drive, Richland Township, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Conemaugh Health System, 1086 Franklin St., Johnstown.

March 6: 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Forest Hills High School, 489 Locust St., Sidman.

March 8: 1 to 7 p.m., Our Town, The Galleria, Richland Township, and noon to 6 p.m., Johnstown Blood Donor Center.

Donations are available only by appointment, which can be made by calling 262-2637 or 800-542-5663, ext. 2633, 2637 or 2657, or by going online at
