A state prison inmate was sentenced Friday in Somerset County court for the beating death of another inmate at State Correctional Institution-Laurel Highlands.
President Judge John M. Cascio sentenced Mark Edward Farabaugh, 43, to serve one to five years in state prison.
Farabaugh had pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the 2012 beating death of Keith Williams, 52, who was wheelchair-bound.
State police in Somerset said Farabaugh hit Williams during a March 24 confrontation inside the prison.
Williams, who received a skull fracture, died two days later at Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown. The coroner’s office ruled that Williams died of blunt-force trauma to the head.
Three inmates told authorities they saw Farabaugh punching Williams during an argument over food.
Farabaugh, who is 6 feet
3 inches tall and weighs about 360 pounds, told investigators that Williams had slapped him in the face and knocked off his glasses.
Farabaugh was sentenced in 2009 in Allegheny County on charges of fleeing or attempting to elude state police, resisting arrest and drunken driving.
Williams, who also was from Allegheny County, was serving time for rape.
