Attack victim dies

JOHNSTOWN — A man who was shot on Thursday during a home invasion robbery in Richland Township has died.

Robert T. Williams Jr., 38, died at 4:24 p.m. Saturday in the Intensive Care Unit of Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, Cambria County Coroner Dennis Kwiatkowski said.

Township police said two black males entered a home in the 1200 block of Lydia Street around 8 p.m. Thursday and shot Williams in the head with a handgun. A child inside was not hurt.

An autopsy, which is scheduled for today, will determine how many times Williams was shot, Kwiatkowski said.

“The investigation is continuing,” he said.

News of Williams’ death came as no surprise to authorities.

“From the beginning we investigated it as a homicide,” Richland police Detective Kevin Gaudlip said.

Gaudlip said it appears robbery was the motive. Police are trying to determine whether anything was taken.

Police sought to assure residents the attack was not random. Police believe Williams knew his attackers. It’s unclear, however, if he invited them inside or if they forced their way into the home.

Police have interviewed neighbors on the street, which is located off Scalp Avenue near Richland Cemetery.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance videos from businesses in the area to help them identify the suspects, determine what direction they fled and if they were on foot or in a vehicle.

“We’re conducting interviews and following up on information,” Gaudlip said.
