Participants praising school summit

— Jeff and Wendy Konicky and Jennifer Reese were among school representatives learning how they can enhance their school’s education during the 2013 School Summit at Richland High School on Wednesday evening .

The three members of Conemaugh Valley Alumni Association were impressed with the help for school districts available at the event.

Sponsored by Community Foundation for the Alleghenies and Wessel and Co. of Johnstown, the program was held for schools in Cambria, Somerset and Bedford counties.

Reese said the alumni association is in the process of signing an agreement with the foundation to handle donations from businesses and individuals for innovative educational programs.

Without the foundation, it would cost the alumni group money just to obtain the nonprofit status needed to solicit donations, she said.

William Hargreaves and John DeMarco of Westmont Hilltop Alumni Association said the tax credit opportunities available through the state that were discussed at the summit are a great opportunity for their association.

“We have a lot of alumni who have businesses,” DeMarco said.

Ray Arcurio, federal programs coordinator for Greater Johnstown School District, said many businesses already have given their support to his district.

“They have been beneficial to many of the educational programs,” he said.
