Event for kids aids charities

JOHNSTOWN — Kids lined up Saturday to knock down characters resembling those in the Angry Birds video game at The Galleria in Richland Township.

Dozen of children made crafts and played carnival games during “Kid’s Day,” sponsored by Circle K, a student volunteer organization at Pitt-Johnstown.

The event was to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the American Cancer Society.

The kids enjoyed tossing balls at the birds stacked on a table.

“It’s one of our most popular games,” said Katie Leonard, president of Circle K. “They recognize the characters. It’s been a lot of fun for them.”

Nine-year-old Jasmine Yonish of Windber took her shot at whacking the birds.

“I got to knock ’em all down,” she said.

Jasmine made the trip to the mall with her parents and her four siblings.

She showed off the crafts she made.

“I made a headband and a bracelet,” she said.

It is the seventh year the Circle K organization has sponsored “Kid’s Day.”

The group has 10 to 15 students who comfort the elderly with nursing home visits and who also participate in the annual Light the Night Walk to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia chapter.

“We try to be active and help out with different activities,” said Erin Sarver, secretary of Circle K.

“The event is going really well,” she said.

Circle K is affiliated with Kiwanis International.

Members of the UPJ College Democrats also volunteered for Saturday’s event.
