Police take 16 dogs from city dwelling

Cruelty probe underway

JOHNSTOWN — An animal cruelty investigation was underway Thursday after city police found 16 dogs living in unclean conditions inside an Old Conemaugh Borough home this week.

Investigators entered the home to find the pack of dogs huddled in cages – in some cases three to a single crate – and inside cages stacked on top of other dog cages, Johnstown police Capt. Andrew Frear said.

The dogs were found living among their own feces – and without food or water in many cases, he added.

“In one instance, three cocker spaniels were in the same cage together,” he added. “It apparently wasn’t a very clean site.”

All 16 pets were turned over to the city after the warrant was executed on Dawn Fetzko-Dietz of Johnstown, who also lives in the home, Frear said.

The dogs have since been turned over to the Cambria County Humane Society, Frear said.

As of Thursday afternoon, no charges had been filed, court staff at District Judge Michael Musulin’s office said.

According to the Cambria County Humane Society’s Facebook page, the dogs were available for adoption Thursday.
