Coroner IDs robber fatally shot by Erie beer clerk

ERIE — A coroner has identified an armed robbery suspect who was fatally shot by a clerk at a beer store in northwestern Pennsylvania.

Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook says the dead man is 21-year-old Patrick Atkins, of Lake City.

Cook says Atkins was shot once in the chest by a clerk authorities are not identifying at the Beer-4 Less store in Millcreek Township shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday. Atkins was found dead up the street from the store after running away wounded.

Township police were interviewing witnesses but hadn’t decided whether the clerk will be charged.

Police say Atkins was wearing dark clothing and a ski mask when he brandished a gun and demanded money from the clerk who, Cooks says, instead shot Atkins once in the chest with a .357 Magnum.
