Altoona hospital may align with UPMC

ALTOONA — Altoona Regional Health System could be the next Pennsylvania hospital to affiliate itself with University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Hospital officials said Wednesday they plan to move into more serious talks with UPMC to enhance care options their hospital currently provides while addressing “significant challenges and financial pressures” in health care today.

''We are interested in a relationship that will enable Altoona Regional to further enhance its quality of care and breadth of medical services,” said Jerry Murray, Altoona Regional president and CEO, “while gaining new access to capital and outstanding technology, science, innovation and expertise.”

Altoona regional has been in talks with several larger systems for nearly a year, hospital officials said.
