A city man was held up at gunpoint in his home Sunday for a small amount of marijuana, city police said.
Then he was arrested after allegedly firing pistol shots at his robbers while chasing them up Sunday Street.
David O. Haye Jr., 27, faces aggravated assault and other charges.
He is accused of recklessly firing at two black men who allegedly stole three “dime bags” from him minutes earlier, Johnstown police Sgt. Pat Goggin said.
“In one sense ... he’s the victim,” Goggin said. “But he tried to take things into his own hands. He pursued these men out into the street, firing at them.”
As Haye fired, he allegedly shouted “I’m from Philly. I’ll take care of business,” Goggin added.
“That’s where the crime comes in,” he said. “He tried to handle it himself. He never even called 911.”
Cambria 911 officials said a call came in reporting shots fired shortly after 1:30 p.m at the Sunday Street-Mine Place intersection.
Goggin said callers witnessed a man later identified as Haye chasing two black men – one in a red hooded sweatshirt and the other in a black hoodie. One of them apparently was armed, he added.
Police said Haye fired at least four shots.
One round traveled through his property’s fence, Goggin said.
There were no indications of injuries, he added.
The alleged robbers apparently were last spotted fleeing toward a wooded area near the former Walnut Grove Hunting & Fishing Club, Goggin said.
A police search for both remained under way Sunday evening.
Anyone with information on the incident may contact police on the county nonemergency line at 472-1680.
