IN BRIEF | Damage minimal in Nanty Glo blaze

NANTY GLO – Quick work by firefighters minimized damage in a borough house fire Thursday evening.

“A couple more minutes and it could have been a different story,” fire Chief Jo LaMantia said from the Nanty Glo Volunteer Fire Company.

An overheated furnace is suspected as the cause of the fire inside a wall, Lamantia said.

The Nanty Glo station was called to the home in the1000 block of Heisley Street just after 6:30 p.m.

Crews were able to quickly extinguish the blaze.



Electrical malfunction suspected in home fire

CHERRY TREE – A fire that began in the basement damaged a Hazelet Church Road home in Montgomery Township, Indiana County, on Tuesday afternoon.

The single resident was not home at the time of the fire, which was reported by a neighbor, said Ben Wilshire, chief of Cherry Tree Volunteer Fire Company.

Cherry Tree firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the basement area, but much of the home suffered water, heat and smoke damage, Wilshire said.

Crews from Glen Campbell, Commodore and Northern Cambria were called to the scene as a precaution.

An electrical malfunction is suspected as the cause, but a state police fire marshal will investigate.



Two companies called to Elder Twp. fire

HASTINGS – Firefighters from Hastings and Patton volunteer fire companies were fighting a house fire in the 800 block of Third Street in Elder Township late on Thursday.

Cambria County emergency dispatch said the alarm was called in at 8:40 p.m. No other information was available.



Agencies may apply for food, shelter aid

Cambria County has been chosen to receive $103,833 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county.

A local board will determine how the funds are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies.

Under the terms of the grant from the national board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government, have an accounting system, practice nondiscrimination, have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and, if the applicant is a private voluntary organization, must have a voluntary board.

Qualifying agencies may apply by contacting the United Way, 422 Main St., Johnstown, Pa. 15901. The application deadline is Jan. 9.
