A man with a gun tucked in his trousers held up a borough pharmacy at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, police said.
The robber entered the Rite Aid on Jefferson Avenue and demanded OxyContin, borough police said. He took what they described as a “large amount” of pills.
They describe the robber as a white male, about 5 feet,
10 inches tall with a stocky build. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.
Police ask anyone with information to call Somerset County 911 non-emergency at (800) 362-5060.
Driver injured in Somerset wreck
SOMERSET – A teenage driver was injured in a one-car crash Sunday on Byers Road in Somerset Township.
Zachary A. Koval, 17, of Somerset, was driving a Chevrolet Corsica that hit two traffic signs and traveled about 17 feet before coming to a stop, police said.
He was transported for medical treatment by Somerset Ambulance, police said. He was wearing a seat belt.
Crash results in detour on Route 219
SOMERSET – Traffic was detoured Sunday afternoon for about 30 minutes after a crash on Route 219 in Brothersvalley Township, state police said.
Raksha Vaghela, 50, of the United Kingdom, was traveling north on 219, left the road and hit an embankment, police said.
Her car then traveled about 28 feet, rolled over and came to rest in the northbound lane of 219. She was not injured, police said.
Suspect held in sledgehammer assault
GREENSBURG – State police charged a Greensburg man with aggravated assault and harassment, saying he struck another man with a 3-pound sledgehammer during an argument.
Christopher Kelly, 35, was arrested after the incident Friday night at the victim’s home in Hannastown.
Kelly also punched the man several times in the face, police said. He is being held in Westmoreland County Prison.
Crews respond to freight train derailment
HYNDMAN – Eight cars of a CSX freight train left the tracks at 7 p.m. Saturday a quarter mile south of Whitford Crossing, which is south of this Bedford County town.
One of the cars was loaded with 190 tons of a hazardous material with an alcohol base, but remained upright and apparently had no leak, authorities said.
Emergency crews remained at the scene late Saturday awaiting the arrival of additional CSX personnel, who investigated the incident Sunday.
Police probe Portage Township harassment
PORTAGE – State police are investigating a harassment incident they say took place at 6 p.m. Saturday in a parking lot along Route 53 in Portage Township.
A 14-year-old youth was verbally harassed by several people in a vehicle and an attempt was made to chase the youngster across the parking lot, police said.
Free skating offered in Ebensburg
EBENSBURG – Ice skating will be free every Sunday this month at the North Central Recreation Center for everyone who takes advantage of CamTran’s free bus rides between
2 and 4 p.m.
Valenty Bottled Water Inc. will provide free skate rentals to the first 50 riders. This is the third year that CamTran, Valenty and the recreation center have teamed up to offer the free skating.
