In brief: Store employees stun would-be robber

ALTOONA

An Ashville man trying to rob a drugstore was stopped when employees incapacitated him with a stun gun, Altoona police said.

Adam Thompson was charged with robbery and other offenses.

Police said he entered the Medicine Shop, 2411 Eighth Ave., around 9 a.m. Friday while wearing a ski mask. He went behind the counter, displayed a knife and demanded pain pills. Employees incapacitated him with a stun gun and held him until police arrived.

Injured baby incident under investigation

SOMERSET – State police and Somerset County Children and Youth Services are continuing investigation into an incident involving a 1-month-old infant that occurred Tuesday in the borough.

The baby had fractures of the ankle, leg and ribs and was taken to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, police said in a news release issued Friday. No other information was available for release at this time, police said.

Equipment failure cuts power in Hooversville

HOOVERSVILLE – An equipment failure at a substation caused a power outage for 107 customers in the Hooversville area from 4:30 to 5:36 a.m. Friday. A 23-kilovolt circuit was knocked out, Penelec spokesman Denny Platt said.

College to hold event for prospective students

LORETTO – St. Francis University will host an open house Monday for prospective students and their families.

Registration will take place from 8:15 to 8:30 a.m. in the John F. Kennedy Student Center on the Loretto campus. A light breakfast will be provided.

Information will be provided about the university’s 30-plus majors and more than 20 concentrations, financial aid, registration, extracurricular activities, campus life and NCAA Division I athletics.

A tour of the campus will be given.
