Amerikohl Mining Inc., based in Stahlstown, Westmoreland County, wants to drill on a 75-acre hill on the southwest side of town. But council said no, fearing that mining would bring runoff and other concerns.
The hillside had been mined years earlier.
“It would be nothing more than an eyesore,’’ Councilman Frank Kaschalk said after the meeting.
In other business, the board said the borough’s Triangle Park would be made available to the local historical society to locate a coal car for display. It would have a false top purporting to be coal, Councilman Steve Szymusiak said, and might be fenced in.
And Nanty Glo Volunteer Fire Company asked the borough to endorse its hosting the Central District Fire Convention in 2013. That year marks the 100th anniversary of the Nanty Glo company.
Council gave its blessing.
Two deaths were associated with the convention the last time it was held in Nanty Glo, in 2005: A fatal drunken-driving wreck and a beating.
