Police release photo of Portage robbery suspect

PORTAGE — State police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the man who attempted to rob the Portage Sheetz last week and have released the suspect’s photo from a surveillance tape.

A man who had gotten a sandwich from a cooler and wanted to buy a pack of cigarettes demanded money from the clerk shortly before 4 a.m. Feb. 5, police said.

When he put $7 on the counter to pay, the clerk told him he didn’t have enough money.

The crook demanded that she give him “everything in the register. Don’t hit the panic button and don’t yell for help.”

But he fled when the store’s telephone rang after the clerk hit a panic button and ran to a back room to hide, police said.

Before fleeing, he put his hand into his jacket pocket and then laid on the counter what the clerk believed to be a gun.

He exited with his sandwich, authorities said.

The man was wearing a dark colored baseball hat with a “P” on it, a light-colored shirt-jacket and a dark shirt with red-and-white stripes across the chest.
