Police and emergency crews were kept busy responding to accidents for several hours Saturday, starting around 4 p.m., as roads began icing over from a winter storm moving through the area.
The accidents included several on routes 30 and 31 in Somerset County and on routes 22 and 53 in the Cresson-Gallitzin area.
A winter weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service was in effect until 10 p.m. Saturday.
Power back on, Penelec says
Power was expected to be restored late Saturday to all customers of Penelec/First Energy who were without service because of Wednesday’s storm, said Denny Platt, area manager.
By Saturday afternoon, about 220 customers in the Johnstown District, which includes northern Somerset County, still were without service; 21 in the Somerset District; and 27 in the Altoona District, Platt said.
The storm, which moved into the area Wednesday night, left 114,000 Penelec customers without service, he said.
In addition to crews from the area, utility crews from Virginia and Ohio and neighboring utilities worked to restore service.
“We want to express our appreciation our customers for their patience in our efforts to restore service,” Platt said Saturday night.
Accident in cemetery injures two women
Two women were injured when their pickup was involved in an accident with a dump truck around 3:30 p.m. Saturday on a road in Grandview Cemetery in Southmont.
West Hills police said Carol A. Knipple, 50, the pickup driver, and her passenger, Christina M. Mnich, 44, both of Soap Hollow Road, Johnstown, were taken to Memorial Medical Center.
Their injuries appeared to be minor, police said.
The dump truck driver was identified as Stanley David Zeganos, 61, of Forest Avenue, Johnstown.
The truck, which is owned by the cemetery association, crossed the road into the path of the oncoming pickup, police said.
Berlin driver hurt when car overturns
SOMERSET – A Berlin woman received minor injuries when her car went out of control on Route 31 shortly after 8:30 p.m. Friday and hit an embankment before rolling over onto its roof.
Jennifer D. Poorbaugh, 34, was transported to Somerset Hospital, state police said.
Information on her injuries was not available.
SUV slides on ice, strikes guardrail
SOMERSET – An SUV driven by a Somerset woman slid into a guardrail on an icy section of Route 219 in Somerset Township and flipped over at 6:47 p.m. Friday.
Lila McCrory, 19, received a minor injury and was taken to Somerset Hospital for treatment, state police said.
Liquor control accuses Dugout of violations
The Dugout, a tavern at 624 Maple Ave., Johnstown, has been cited by the state Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement for two liquor code violations.
Enforcement officers from the state police allege that a bartender identified as Frank A. Arcuri consumed alcoholic beverages while tending bar or serving alcoholic beverages on July 21 and 26, Sept. 23 and Nov. 6.
It’s also alleged that there were gambling devices on the premises or that gambling was permitted there.
The code violations will be heard by an PLCB administrative law judge.
