Oil leak closes downtown street

Johnstown firefighters and highway workers were busy Friday evening cleaning up four quarts of engine oil that leaked over a couple block area on Napoleon Street from a commercial bus owned by Lodestar Bus Lines & Tours, of Richland Township.

The worst of the leakage occurred in a one-block area of the westbound lane of Napoleon between Haynes and Somerset streets, said Eric Luther, acting captain of the Johnstown Fire Department.

That section of the roadway had to be closed.

The bus driver knew something was wrong and stopped the bus near the Cambria County War Memorial Arena, he said.

Firefighters used 15, 50-pound bags of absorbent and the highway department used two tons of sand to absorb the oil, he said. A street sweeper was brought in to help highway workers and firefighters clean up the absorbent, he said.

A mechanic brought a replacement bus so the 50 passengers could continue their journey. The mechanic then fixed the disabled bus and drove it away, Luther said.
