Wind tears cap off elevator shaft

The Tribune-Democrat

Johnstown firefighters were called to Weaver’s Confectionery, 106 Clinton St., downtown, around 4:40 p.m. Tuesday when strong winds tore off a section of a cap of an elevator shaft on the multistory building.

The section – about 6 feet long and 2 feet wide – fell onto an unoccupied car that was parked in an empty lot beside the building. Damage to the car included a shattered rear window.

Marlene Daniels, owner of the building and the confectionery, blamed the wind. She had just finished picking up her trash that strong winds scattered when associates at the nearby CMB Business Machines came over and said that the cap had fallen onto one of their cars.

Daniels said she just had a new roof installed two weeks ago.

The cap on the elevator shaft had been installed years ago, she said. She is asking her roofer to examine the situation.
