Officer: Charges to be filed against chief

HASTINGS — Criminal charges will be filed today against Northern Cambria’s longtime police chief, who was involved in an altercation with another police officer, said Susquehanna Township’s officer-in-charge.

The counts will be filed at District Judge Michael Zungali’s office.

Northern Cambria Borough police Chief Kevin Stanek, who is a Susquehanna Township supervisor, faces DUI and assault charges stemming from a traffic stop involving his stepson, Greg Kline, early Saturday.

If convicted of assault against a police officer, Stanek could lose his municipal police officer certification.

Susquehanna Township police Officer Ronald Schilling said Wednesday that he would not disclose the specific charges against Stanek until they were filed at Zungali’s office.

Schilling claims that Stanek arrived at the scene in the borough’s unmarked police cruiser, and the two became involved in a physical altercation that resulted in Schilling using pepper-spray to subdue Stanek.

Stanek’s Breathalyzer test was 0.19 percent, Schilling said, and he later refused a blood test at Miners Medical Center in Hastings.

Kline’s blood-alcohol reportedly registered 0.246 percent.

Refusal of a blood test typically results in a one-year suspension of a driver’s license.

Stanek has been a member of the Northern Cambria Borough police force for more than 20 years.
