City woman accused of scalding baby in bath

A Johnstown woman has been arrested on child endangerment and assault charges by city police, who said she placed a 1-year-old baby girl in scalding hot water to bathe her.
The infant screamed in pain and began kicking her feet in attempts to get out as Tawsha Marie Hamer was lifting the baby into the water, a witness told police.
The child’s feet and ankles were severely burned, and other burns were evident on her legs and body from splashing water, Julie Wagner, the police’s juvenile officer, said in an affidavit.
The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Solomon Homes. The baby was taken to Memorial Medical Center by the baby’s father when he returned home from work and saw the injuries, Wagner said.
Because of the severity of the injuries and related problems, including an infection, the child was transferred to the West Penn Burn Center in Pittsburgh, police Chief Craig Foust said Thursday.
The baby remains hospitalized there, he said. A condition report was not available.
Hamer, 30, of Solomon Homes, was arraigned before District Judge Mary Ann Zanghi of Vinco on charges of aggravated and simple assault, child endangerment and reckless endangerment.
She was lodged in the Cambria County Prison in lieu of $75,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday before District Judge Leonard Grecek of Johnstown.
Hamer, the fiancee of the baby’s father, was acting as the child’s babysitter at Hamer’s residence at the time of the incident, Wagner said.
An emergency room physician at Memorial said the baby had received second-degree burns of the feet and ankles and first-degree burns of other parts of her body, according to the affidavit.
The child’s ankles and feet were blistered and bloodied with the skin peeling off the feet, Wagner said.
Foust said the police were called in to investigate after the baby had been taken to the hospital.
Hamer was arrested Wednesday.
