Police crack down on Portage crime
BY KATHY MELLOTT
The Tribune-Democrat
PORTAGE —
Following a recent rash of burglaries, state police are asking Portage area residents to be on the lookout and report any suspicious behavior.
Anyone with information may call the state police at 471-6500. Callers can remain anonymous.
“Right now, Portage and Portage Township have been getting bombarded,” state police Cpl. Frank Mihalko said of the burglaries and attempted burglaries.
In response, state police have increased patrols significantly.
One trooper now spends about 60 percent of his time in the Portage area.
While the goal is to have plenty of cruisers around the township, police still need residents’ help, Mihalko said.
“We’ve enacted saturated patrols for Portage Township, and you’re going to see a lot more state police patrols,” he said.
“We’re going to be hitting the area hard, especially on the weekends.”
More than a half-dozen burglaries have been reported by businesses in the township and borough in recent weeks.
Attempted break-ins – in-cluding two attempts to gain entry at Stager’s Store, a large supermarket on Sonman Road – also have been reported.
Sportsmen’s clubs in nearby Washington and Summerhill townships also were hit.
Portage Borough has its own police department with a full-time officer and five part timers, but Portage Township relies solely on state police.
That prompted a realignment of troopers to the area, Mihalko told residents at a township meeting this week.
“I’m here to plead with you,” he said.
“If you see something, let us know. Anything will help.”
Residents can expect to see a crackdown even on more minor crimes, Mihalko said.
The problem is that the criminals may not be from the area, which makes identifying them difficult, Supervisor Ken Trimbath said.
“These crimes often are not committed by our local residents. It’s often people from out of town,” he said.
But regardless of where the criminals are coming from, authorities are convinced the burglaries are drug-related.
“You have people shooting heroin, taking illegal pills,” Mihalko said.
“When you have that happening, they’re out stealing.”
