New – Portage police arrest teen believed responsible for string of burglaries

PORTAGE —
A 17-year-old Portage area teen was arrested Monday night as he stood outside Portage Auto Parts with a crow bar in his hand, acting officer in charge Judy King said today.
Police hope the arrest of the teen, who was turned over to juvenile authorities, will bring an end to the crime wave in the Portage Borough and Portage Township area which began nearly a month ago.
“There were a few things that linked him with the others 100 percent,” King said. “Hopefully this will be the stop of those burglaries.”
King said Officer Jacob Kehn was making a routine check of businesses when he spotted someone standing outside the Main Street auto parts store, a business which had been burglarized in late April.
King would not discuss any information the teen provided police.
“Whether he’s acting alone or with others we don’t know, but he’s definitely a link,” she said
More than a half dozen business and two sportsman’s clubs have been burglarized and unsuccessful attempts made at others.
King said the borough department is working with state police and the investigation is continuing.
