Northern Cambria school officials probe students' threat allegations
BY JULIE BENAMATI
The Tribune-Democrat
NORTHERN CAMBRIA —
A Northern Cambria High School student has been suspended in the wake of an investigation into allegations that threatening statements were made last week.
District Solicitor Gary Jubas said it was reported by the district’s school resource, Officer Steve Cummins, that a student or students made threatening statements Friday toward other members of the student body.
Jubas declined to specify what the threats were or if any weapons were mentioned.
“On Friday, it was reported by the school resource officer that a student came to the high school principal and heard there were students making threats,” Jubas said.
“That generated an immediate investigation.”
Superintendent Thomas Estep confirmed the incident.
“Late on Monday, a student was found who heard the statement,” Estep said. “There was not a direct threat made to anyone, and no names were named, according to the information we have at this time.”
Jubas said he instructed Cummins to call the parents of the students allegedly involved. Cummins later interviewed the students with their parents present.
Intensive searches immediately were made of the high school building and lockers.
Jubas reported that nothing threatening was found.
Estep said at least one student has been suspended from school while the investigation continues.
Jubas said that while the threats initially were vague and not aimed at a particular student or group of students, the district did not hesitate to take action.
“We take these things very seriously,” Jubas said. “Interviews of other students are still being conducted, and further action will be taken if warranted.”
