Police: Care home employee took ring from patient’s finger

Associated Press

OAKMONT, Pa. Police say an Oakmont nursing home worker forcibly removed a wedding ring from the finger of an 87-year-old Alzheimer’s patient then pawned it for $5,200.

Oakmont police say they recovered the ring, which is worth $25,000, and have charged 32-year-old Jami Batista Young of Penn Hills with the robbery and theft.

Young is also charged with simple assault because police say it appears she broke the elderly woman’s finger in removing the ring.

Police say the woman’s family noticed the ring missing during a visit May 19 to Westminster Place at Presbyterian SeniorCare.

A spokeswoman for the home says Young has been fired. The Associated Press cannot find a listed phone for Young and court records don’t list a defense attorney.
