IN BRIEF | Transit agencies receive $1M grants

CamTran in Cambria County and AMTRAN in Blair County are among five mass-transit providers in Pennsylvania that will share in $13.4 million in federal Recovery Act funds to make improvements.
CamTran was awarded a $1.3 million grant to renovate the original concrete deck floor of its transit center in downtown Johnstown and to purchase a 35-foot-long hybrid-electric bus.
AMTRAN will use its $1.5 million grant to complete major renovations at its main facility buildings. Improvements include a conference room and training center.
Work to start Monday on Adams Twp. bridge
PennDOT’s Cambria County maintenance workers will begin replacing a bridge on Route 2005 (Llanfair Road) in Adams Township on Monday.
An 8.2-mile detour will be in place while the bridge is removed and replaced. Traffic will be rerouted from Route 2005 to Township Route 326 (Krayn Road) to Route 160, to
Route 2003 (Peaceful Valley Road) and back to Route 2005.
The project is expected to be completed by Sept. 4 at a cost of $180,000.
West End to hold community day
A community day event is planned Saturday in Johns-town’s West End neighborhood.
The gathering, organized by West End Improvement Group, is scheduled from noon to
2 p.m. at the city’s skate park,
J Street and Fairfield Avenue.
The event will feature Civil War re-enactors, a Johnstown police K-9 demonstration, free hot dogs and drinks, a bake sale and prize giveaways. A “celebrity water-balloon throw” will feature Ray Arcurio, assistant principal at West Side Elementary School in Johnstown.
Cars and crafts on display Saturday
The Somerset Church of the Brethren Youth CONNECT will sponsor a 1950s Cruise-In & Craft Show from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the church at 606 Berlin Plank Road. Proceeds will benefit the group’s trip to National Youth Conference.
The event will feature “Fab ’50s music” as well as refreshments, games, door prizes, a Chinese auction and lots of cars. The public is invited.
There is no admission fee.
