Quecreek museum set for groundbreaking

BY SAMANTHA LANDIS
For The Tribune-Democrat

SIPESVILLE Organizers are hoping the new Quecreek Mine visitors center – being built by the Amish – will tell the moving story of the nine miners rescued there six years ago.

Yet the personal touch will remain, with a tour guide available at the visitors center of the Quecreek Mine Rescue Foundation when it’s open.

“We promise to have someone on hand to tell the story at all times,” said Lori Arnold, vice president of the foundation.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the visitors center is Saturday, as part of the sixth anniversary of the 2002 rescue of nine trapped miners.

The center will be “an unconventional building,” Arnold said.

“Most people construct a building and hope people come,” she said. “We have the people, but we just need the building.”

About 98 percent of the new visitors center labor was done by the Amish of Ohio.

“(The Amish) committed to build as much as they can – for no pay – two years ago,” Arnold said. “When we received the permits for the building, we called them.”

About half of the $200,000 needed has been raised.

To bring in more, a silent auction will be held for two copies of the book “Our Story: 77 Hours That Tested Our Friendship and Our Faith,” autographed by all nine miners and former Gov. Mark Schweiker.

Two other autographed copies will be put up for bid shortly on eBay.

As part of the atmosphere of the site, architect Roy Kemp has incorporated pieces of the old Sipesville fire hall to reflect the look of where the families stayed during the ordeal.

Though the building is changing, the Arnolds intend to keep in close contact with the visitors.

Arnold said the projected completion date is summer 2009. Phase two of the project will go through the winter.

“For phase two of the project, we have been discussing how we can create a ride to simulate the Quecreek Mine Rescue experience.

“From the dark of the mine to the sounds of the water bursting, we think it could be a big draw for visitors.”

The visitors center will be open year-round.

“We hope it will be very busy,” Arnold said. “Each day, I look forward to the visitors I meet and the stories of hope that they share with us.

“The word ‘rescue’ in our name goes above and beyond the Quecreek Mine rescue. It inspires others and that’s what we strive to do every day.”
