In brief: Man waives hearing on trespass, assault

A Johnstown man will face Cambria County court action on charges that he trespassed on Johnstown Housing Authority property three times and punched a 12-year-old boy in the mouth during one of those incidents.

Anthony Quinn Ingram, 45, waived his right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday before District Judge Michael Musulin of downtown Johnstown.

Ingram, who had been lodged in the Cambria County Prison, was released on bail after the hearing.

Johnstown police said Ingram, who has been banned from Housing Authority property, violated the ban three times in the past two months by being at the Oakhurst Homes.

While there on June 16, Ingram, who had developed a dislike for a 12-year-boy, threatened the boy and then punched him in the mouth, police said.

Truck-car wreck injures Derry driver

DERRY – A wreck in Derry Township, Westmoreland County, on Tuesday afternoon sent one man to a Pittsburgh hospital with major injuries, said state police in Greensburg.

Jason Gaffney, 25, of Derry, was injured when the 1988 Honda Accord he was driving crossed the center line of Route 217 and collided with a Freightliner truck traveling in the opposite direction.

Gaffney was flown from the scene by medical helicopter.

The hospital to which he was taken was not identified.

The trucker, David Shirey, 46, of Ligonier, was taken to Latrobe for treatment of possible minor injuries, police said.

Golf cart stolen from Berlin home

BERLIN – A golf cart was stolen from the driveway of a residence on Brubaker Street between 9 p.m. Tuesday and 11 a.m. Wednesday, borough police said.

The cart is white and has yellow reflective tape on the back posts and the name “Bucky” on the back of the cart.

UPJ, IUP make ‘best college’ list

Pitt-Johnstown has again been named a “Best Northeastern College” by The Princeton Review.

The Richland Township university and IUP in Indiana are among 218 schools included in the northeast region.

Robert Franek, Princeton Review’s vice president of publishing, said the schools are chosen primarily for their academic programs.

An effort is made to feature a range of institutions by size, selectivity, character and locale, he said.

“We choose the schools based on institutional data we collect from several hundred schools in each region, our visits to schools over the years and the opinions of independent and high school-based college advisers whose recommendations we invite,” Franek said.

“We also take into account what each school’s customers – their students – report to us about their campus experiences on our 80-question student survey.”

Pitt-Johnstown will be featured in “The Best Northeastern Colleges: 2010 Edition,” available Saturday from Random House/Princeton Review Books.

Farm service group accepting nominees

Nominations are being accepted through Monday for those interested in serving on the Cambria County Farm

Service Agency committee from the northern third of the county.

County committees provide local input on commodity price-support loans and payments, conservation programs, emergency programs and payment eligibility.

Preschool will hold open house

NEW FLORENCE – The Little Learning Lamp at Laurel Valley Elementary School in New Florence will hold an open house and registration from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the school, 137 Education Lane.

The preschool is open for children who turn 4 before Sept. 1.

Tuition is based on income, and scholarships are available for eligible families through the state’s prekindergarten tax credit program.

Hours of operation are from 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Class size is limited to 20, so parents are being encouraged to register early.

Boynton Bridge work to begin Monday

BOYNTON – Work will begin Monday on rehabilitating the Boynton Bridge on Route 219 in Somerset County.

All work will involve daylight traffic control, PennDOT said, and minimal delays can be expected.

The $191,000 project will consist of replacing concrete under the deck and stream work to protect the bridge from scouring action.

IA Construction Corp. of Zelienople, Butler County, is the contractor.

Junior member takes seat on council

EBENSBURG – Annie Takacs is the Borough Council’s newest appointee to the junior counselor post.

She was sworn in at the Ebensburg council meeting Monday.

The junior member must be a borough resident and a student.

Takacs will be a senior at Bishop Carroll High School in the fall.

She is a member of the volleyball and track teams and the ski club. She is president of the school’s National Honor Society.

Assistant instructor hired for Tennis Center

EBENSBURG – Doug Cherry of Johnstown has been hired as an assistant tennis instructor at the Ebensburg Tennis Center.

Borough Council approved Cherry’s hiring at its meeting Monday.
