In brief: Man accused of firing shotgun at playground

A Johnstown man will face Cambria County Court action on charges he fired a shotgun at a Moxham playground about

7 p.m. July 8.

Jeramey T. Johnson, 18, waived his right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday before District Judge Leonard Grecek of Roxbury.

He was returned to the Cambria County Prison in lieu of bail.

Johnstown police said there were numerous children playing at the Village Street Playground at the time. Police said Johnson became involved in a dispute with two teenage boys and then left and returned with a shotgun. Police said Johnson threatened to kill the two teens and fired one round at a concrete wall.



AAABA Fashion Show at The Galleria

The Galleria, Richland Township, will hold a AAABA Back to School Fashion Show today.

The event will take place at 7 p.m. on the mall’s lower level.

AAABA Ambassadors will model the latest fashions. Several players from Johnstown entry Delweld also will make an appearance.



Hooversville fire investigation continuing

HOOVERSVILLE – The cause of a suspicious fire that destroyed a former borough hotel remains undetermined.

A state police fire marshal in Indiana has turned over the investigation to borough police, authorities said.

No one was injured in the July 25 fire at the former Grand Central Hotel, which housed travelers in the early 1900s.

The fire started in the rear of the first floor and collapsed the building.

The building had been condemned, but the owner has been unable to pay for demolition, borough officials said.



Township supervisors’ meeting rescheduled

NORTHERN CAMBRIA – Susquehanna Township supervisors canceled their regular August meeting that was scheduled Tuesday.

According to Supervisor Kevin Stanek, the meeting is tentatively rescheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the municipal building.

Stanek said the meeting was canceled because one of the other supervisors was ill and could not attend.

CamTran makes bus route adjustments

CamTran has made alternative arrangements for its Route 14, which is being affected by the closure of Ferndale bridge.

As reported, the bridge will be closed tonight and will reopen sometime Friday.

A helper bus will pick up passengers at stops in Ferndale, Riverside and Camoset Village at the Route 14 regularly scheduled times.

Passengers on the Ferndale bridge are instructed to walk to the bus shelter along Bond Street and Central Avenue to board the bus.

The helper bus will then link passengers with Route 12, which takes them either to the downtown transit center or to the Westwood area.

For the return trip, passengers should board the Route 12 bus and transfer to one of the helper buses.

The changes will be in place until PennDOT has completed construction work on Friday.

Vehicular homicide case set for Sept. 4

EBENSBURG – The vehicular homicide case in which a Johnstown man is charged in the traffic death of a schoolgirl now is set for jury selection Sept. 4, District Attorney Patrick Kiniry said Wednesday.

Shannon Dykeman 34, of the 100 block of Fairfield Avenue, is charged in the Jan. 31, 2006, death of 15-year-old Kyna Sokol on Franklin Street near Roxbury Park.

The case has been delayed several times for what defense attorney Kevin Rozich had described as plea negotiations.

The girl was hit by Dykeman’s van as she was crossing Franklin Street to get to a school bus stop.



Five charged with underage drinking

LORETTO – Five young adults have been arrested for underage drinking, state police said Tuesday. Police responded to an underage drinking party at 2:30 a.m. Sunday at apartments behind the Loretto fire hall.

Those arrested included Brittany N. Kitz, 20, and Amanda M. DeAntonio, 19, both of Altoona. The other three, all 19, are from Bethel Park, New York and New Jersey.



Cresson historical group hosting picnic

CRESSON – Cresson Area Historical Association Inc. will host a picnic at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Admiral Peary Park in Cresson.

The public is invited

Free hot dogs and drinks will be provided until 6 p.m.

Those attending are asked to bring a covered side dish and a lawn chair or blanket.

Information and discussion will be presented for area students on the Central Cambria Writing Festival in celebration of the upcoming 100th anniversary of the discovery of the North Pole by Admiral Robert E Peary, April 6, 2009.

A free showing of the film “Honor and Glory” will take place at 6:30 p.m. in Old Main of Mount Aloysius College. The 94-minute film depicts the journey to the top of the earth – the North Pole.

Summerhill Twp. firefighters land funding

BEAVERDALE – The Summerhill Township Volunteer Fire Company has been awarded a $198,930 grant from the United States Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters program.

The funds will be used for operations and safety, said U.S. Rep. John Murtha, D-Johnstown.

“Nearly 75 percent of our nation’s 35,000 fire agencies are volunteer,” Murtha said in a release. “Their jobs are made more difficult by shrinking budgets that don’t have the flexibility for funding equipment, training or new vehicles.”



DQs donate to Children’s Miracle Network

Participating Dairy Queen restaurants will be donating proceeds from Blizzard Treats today during the third annual Miracle Treat Day.

Proceeds from each Blizzard sold will go to Children’s Miracle Network, a nonprofit dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children by raising funds for children’s hospitals. Last year’s event raised $4 million.
