Police say man kicked woman, baby in Jenner Twp.

JENNERS – A man was arrested early Sunday after an incident involving a woman and an 11-month-old boy.

State police said John Dohoda, 21, of Peach Street, pushed the woman to the ground about 1:30 a.m. while she was holding the child, then kicked them both, causing bruises and abrasions.

A relative took the woman and baby to Somerset Hospital, where a spokesman said the woman was treated and released.

Information about the baby was not available.

Dohoda was arraigned before District Judge Susan Mankamyer of Boswell and placed in the Somerset County Jail in lieu of $5,000 straight bond. He posted bond later Sunday and was released, authorities said.

Information about specific charges filed by the state police was not immediately available. The incident happened in the 100 block of Cloud Street, Jenner Township, police said.



Burglaries investigated

SOMERSET – State police in Somerset are asking the public’s help in solving two burglaries.

Someone entered a cabin along Black Cherry Road in Jefferson Township sometime between July 29 and Wednesday making off with an $800 32-inch Viore LCD television belonging to John T. Estes, 75, of Bethesda, Md., troopers said.

Burglars on Thursday climbed through a window of the Somerset Milling Co., Somerset Township and stole various items including pens, pencils, toilet paper and drinks, troopers said.



Altoona robbery probed

ALTOONA – Two men held up another man at gunpoint early Saturday in an alley off Sixth Avenue, police said.

The man was approached from behind by two black men, police said.

One of the assailants showed a gun and fired it to frighten the man being robbed.

Police searched the neighborhood around the 200 block of Sixth Avenue Alley, including Second Street, where the assailants were seen running away.

No suspects were caught, and the investigation continues, police said.



Woodland Owners’ picnic set

STOYSTOWN – Larry Powell, a partner in the operation of Appalachian Forest Consultants, will host a picnic of the Laurel Highlands Woodland Owners Association from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at his home in the 3900 block of Lincoln Avenue on Stone Bridge Hill in Quemahoning Township.

The association is made up of forest landowners and those interested in forests. The picnic is open to the public.

Those planning to attend are asked to bring a covered-dish meal.

Habitat fundraiser scheduled

D.B. Homes will host a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity of Cambria County during the grand opening of its first model home from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The home, a two-story model, is located at D.B. Homes office and design center,

706 Eisenhower Blvd. in Richland.

Area businesses have donated items to be used for the raffle fundraiser. Visitors to the open house can purchase the tickets for the raffle or make monetary donations. All proceeds go to Habitat.

Route 403 detour begins today

PennDOT announced that the nighttime detour on Route 403 for the Ferndale Bridge rehabilitation project will be in effect beginning this week. The contractor plans on implementing the detour beginning today, weather depending.

A 10.8 mile detour will be in effect during this time and it will run from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. The detour will run from Route 403 to Route 271 to Route 3007 (Goucher Street) to Route 3011 (Franklin Street) to Route 985 back to Route 403.

The overall project will replace the bridge deck and rehabilitate the existing single-span through truss structure over the Stonycreek River. In addition, the project will include roadway approach repairs, guide rail updates and the replacement of curbs and sidewalks.



Shrubbery catches fire in Upper Yoder

Firefighters were called shortly after 3:30 p.m. Sunday to 104 Thunderbird Drive in Upper Yoder Township when shrubbery caught fire as the homeowner was attempting to smoke bees from the shrubs.

Pete Long, deputy chief of Upper Yoder Township Volunteer Fire Company, said Susan Zwiener extinguished the blaze in the shrubbery with a garden hose, but not before it spread to a taller pine tree and into soffit and fascia on the second floor of the house.

Upper Yoder, with assistance from Southmont Volunteer Fire Company, had the situation under control shortly before 4:30 p.m., Long said.

There were no injuries, he said.
