Missing roller case closed

By PATRICK BUCHNOWSKI
The Tribune-Democrat

DAVIDSVILLE Conemaugh Township supervisors on Wednesday closed the case of a missing township roller, though questions linger.

In a letter supervisors received Wednesday, District Attorney Jerry Spangler concluded a township employee sold the 10,780-pound, 1960 Gallion roller to Kanter Iron and Steel in December 2004 for $539.

The money was deposited in the general fund, the letter said.

State police combed township records, canceled checks and receipts from the scrap yard to reach their conclusion, the letter said.

But no receipt identified what was sold, supervisors said.

“Does it specifically say roller? No it does not,” supervisor Chairman Steven Buncich said.

Supervisors in February asked state police to investigate the missing roller after residents questioned what happened to the money.

The investigation concluded with no charges filed.

“I’m not satisfied,” Supervisor Al Zuccolotto said.

It’s believed the money was deposited into a slush fund employees used to fund retirement parties, Zuccolotto said.

In his letter, Spangler said all money from the retirement fund was later deposited into the general fund.
