Wal-Mart truck drivers offer people with medical conditions a feel for the road

BY KELLY URBAN
The Tribune-Democrat

As a way to give back to the community its serves, Wal-Mart in Richland Township held its annual Wal-Mart Heart program Thursday for people of all ages with chronic medical conditions or special needs.

The nationwide program started 10 years ago by Wal-Mart truck drivers and has quickly become the fastest growing program supported by the company.

“We as drivers wanted to do something to give these people a special day,” said Steve Koleszarik, a Heart program member and Windber resident. “We make them honorary truck drivers and give them cap and a uniform shirt.”

More than 100 Wal-Mart drivers are involved in the voluntary program.

“We’ll take them for a ride in the truck around the parking lot so they can get a feel for what goes on,” Koleszarik said.

Five-year-old Tyler Lybarger of Windber could barley contain his excitement.

“I’ve been on the truck five times with my Pappy,” he said. “I’m going to sit there and be quiet.”

Bill Lybarger, Tyler’s grandfather, is a Wal-Mart driver and gave Tyler his ride around Richland Town Centre.

“I’m going to work here and drive a truck,” Tyler said with a laugh.

Arielle Gaston, 13, of Windber said it was nice to see all the people who turned out to support her.

“Oh my gosh, I’m so excited about this,” she said with a big smile. “I want to get in the truck and see the inside.”

Gaston said she decided to take part in the event to show others that it’s OK to be different.

“It’s a way to express yourself and I try to reach out to others whenever I can,” she said.

Prior to taking their ride, the three participants also received an engraved trophy, participation certificate, a Wal-Mart gift bag, balloons and cake.
