In brief: License centers will be closed for holiday

— PennDOT said this week that all driver license and photo centers will be closed Saturday and Monday in observance of Labor Day.
Customers may still obtain a variety of driver and vehicle products and services online through PennDOT’s driver and vehicle services Web site, dmv.state.pa.us.
Driver and vehicle online services include driver license renewal, photo ID and vehicle registrations, driver-history services, change of address and exam scheduling.
Series will highlight Somerset mining
CAMP HILL – Somerset County’s mining history will be part of the upcoming Labor Day weekend as PCN pays tribute to Pennsylvania coal miners and the history of the coal mining industry in the state.
Former Pennsylvania coal miners and those related to the industry will recount their experiences in a special series called, “Tales from the Mines.”
The network will air these interviews beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday, with new and encore presentations slated for Labor Day.
At 6:15 p.m. Saturday, the program will feature Joseph Sbaffoni of the state Department of Environmental Protection, bureau director for mine Safety. He will address the Quecreek Mine Rescue.
And, at 10:45 a.m. Monday, the Coal Mining Heritage Conference at State College will feature Millie Allen Beik, author of “The Miners of Windber.” She will speak on “Company Rule and Democracy in Windber.”
Plaque to honor those who helped light bridge
A plaque will be unveiled and dedicated at 2 p.m. Sunday at the St. Mary’s pavilion on Power Street to honor those who sponsored the lighting of the Minersville bridge.
The plaque will be unveiled by Martha Banda.
The placing of ornamental lights on city bridges has been a years-long project by
Dr. Anthony Gergely.
Borough to pay $9,600 for fencing
EBENSBURG – Borough Council agreed to spend $9,600 for new fencing at the Hillcrest water tanks.
That’s a lower price than the $12,780 first bid, said borough Manager Dan Penatzer.
Changes for the second bid include using 11 gauge fencing rather than the heavier 9 gauge first included in the specifications.
