College offers more degrees

BY KELLY URBAN
The Tribune-Democrat

Pennsylvania Highlands Community College is expanding its degree programs.

College officials announced for the spring 2009 semester they will begin offering associate of applied science degrees in culinary arts and welding technology. In addition, a revamped criminal justice program debuted this semester.

“We’ve had an increased interest in these programs,” said Erica Reighard, associate dean of instruction. “We want to have academic programs that meet the needs and interests of our students.”

Students enrolled in criminal justice learn cover topics such as corrections, law enforcement and the court systems. They also are required to participate in an internship.

Reighard said that the college was approached by individuals in the community with ties to culinary arts and welding who said they see a need for these types of programs.

“That’s the neat part – to have employers come to us,” she said. “They also are looking to have their own employees work toward a degree.”

The culinary arts program offers a foundation in general business studies with a focus on food and beverage production and service, culinary skills, financial management and nutrition. Students will receive hands-on training at the facilities of Crown American Hotels.

The welding technology program will be offered in conjunction with JWF Industries.

It offers training in multiple welding styles and provides technical knowledge of blueprint reading, layout, metallurgy and manipulative welding skills. Students will split their time with classes held at the college’s Richland campus and JWF Industries.
