In brief: Recycling event set for Saturday

The Cambria County chapter of Pa. CleanWays, a nonprofit with a mission to eliminate illegal dumping and littering in Pennsylvania, is conducting appliance, tire and electronics recycling collections.

Collections will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Cambria Township Municipal Building, Sept. 27 in Northern Cambria Borough and Oct. 4 at Portage Township Municipal Building.

The fee for appliances is $12 with Freon and $6 without Freon.

The fee for tires is $2 off rim and $3 on rim.

For certified hard drive destruction it is $10.

Television are 20 cents a pound and other electronics 15 cents a pound.

4-H auction sells 193 animals

EBENSBURG – The 4-H Livestock Auction at the Cambria County Fair on Sept. 4 sold 193 animals to support the 4-H program and its young members.

Seven animals were donated back to be resold, with the proceeds totaling $2,126 going to selected 4-H clubs, while five more animals were resold at $1,075 to benefit the 4-H Livestock scholarship fund.

Elderton State Bank of Indiana County purchased a total of 14 animals, while Long Barn of Ebensburg supported the program with the highest capital outlay. 4-H officials said there were a total of 114 buyers at the annual event.

Windber library discussions set

WINDBER – “Hot Coffee and Conversation” will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Windber Public Library.

“Of the people, by the people and for the people,” a voter awareness/registration event, will answer questions about the Disability Coalition of PA and educate attendees on the history of women’s suffrage. The event also will allow Somerset County voters the opportunity to become familiar with the county voting machine.

Rod Stemple of the Somerset County Blind Center will discuss “Trust” at noon and 2 p.m.

Refreshments will be provided by the bakery at Richland Giant Eagle.

The event is free to the public.

Motorcyclist injured in Route 271 wreck

NICKTOWN – A motorcyclist was flown to Memorial Medical Center with serious injuries about 4 p.m. Monday after wrecking on Route 271.

State police said Nathaniel R. Buck, 24, of Northern Cambria was passing at high speed in a no-passing zone.

He had to suddenly move back into his own lane to avoid oncoming traffic and, in doing so, lost control and laid the bike down on its side, police said.

Cambria library holding used book sale

The Friends of the Cambria County Library will hold its annual Used Book and Bake Sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Sunday.

The sale will be held in the community room at the main library in Johnstown.

Donations of gently used books are being accepted. No magazines are being taken.

Police probing log-splitter theft

NEW FLORENCE – State police are investigating the theft of a log splitter from the New Florence area property of Lloyd Paynter, 55, of the 700 block of Oakwood Drive.

The splitter is a red, fold-down model and was stolen between Friday evening and Sunday morning.

IUP celebrating Constitution Day

INDIANA – IUP will celebrate Constitution Day today with three events free to the public.

Constitution Day commemorates the signing of the Constitution – 221 years old this year.

Events begin with a public reading of the Constitution from noon to 1 p.m. in the IUP Oak Grove. One hundred members of the IUP community will read the Constitution, starting with the preamble and ending with the 27 th amendment.

IUP political science professor emeritus Ed Platt will discuss “Making Sense of the Electoral College” from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in 210 Stabley Library.

Professors David Chambers, Mac Fiddner (political science) and Joe Mannard (history) will play the role of Constitution writers Ben Franklin, Charles Pinckney and James Madison, respectively, for “A Conversation with the Framers” from 3 to 4 p.m. in the IUP Hadley Union Building Allegheny Room.

Cresson officer hired as detective

EBENSBURG – Lia Lantz-Mock, a Cresson Township police officer, has been hired as a full-time detective for the Cambria County District Attorney’s office.

Mock, who also works as a part-time Ebensburg Borough police officer, will be paid $15.11 an hour as a county detective.

She is replacing Thomas Moore, who now is an investigator with the state attorney general’s office.

She is one of six detectives now on staff, District Attorney Patrick Kiniry said.

Team Chevrolet holding child-seat check

Team Chevrolet, in conjunction with Safe Kids of Pennsylvania, will hold a free children’s car-seat check from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the dealership at 1920 Bedford St.

Parents and grandparents are encouraged to bring their child in the car or booster seat currently being used for a check for proper installation and any other problems the check-up may reveal, a Team spokeswoman said.

Quinto lottery tour visiting Johnstown

MIDDLETOWN – The Pennsylvania Lottery is celebrating the launch of its newest game, Quinto, with a statewide promotional tour at 19 Lottery retail locations.

The Lottery’s Quito promotional RV tour will make a stop from noon until 2 p.m. Thursday at Stems Cloverleaf Quick Stop, 130 Belmont St., Johnstown.
