IN BRIEF | Carrolltown driver hurt in crash

NORTHERN CAMBRIA – A Carrolltown man was airlifted to a Johnstown hospital following a one-vehicle crash Thursday in Northern Cambria Borough.

Borough police said Derek Lowmaster, believed to be in his early 20s, was driving a sport utility vehicle on Bigler Avenue at 10:20 a.m. when he lost control rounding a curve.

The SUV went over an embankment and into the Dumm Lumber & Building Supply building.

Lowmaster was taken by ambulance to Miners Medical Center in Hastings and then flown to Memorial Medical Center, where he was in serious condition Thursday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said.

No one inside the building was injured, police said.

Police are continuing their investigation.



Save Westy group hires law firm

Save Westy, a group of Westmont Borough residents fighting a proposal to switch zoning to commercial from residential on a section of Goucher Street, has hired a law firm to represent them and has scheduled an informational meeting.

The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Westmont Hilltop Middle School.

Speaking at the event will be Michael W. Sahlaney, a partner in the law firm of Sahlaney and Dudeck that Save Westy hired, according to the group’s news release.

The group also has invited the six candidates running for Westmont Borough Council and the mayor’s seat to speak.



Coloring contest entries due today

EBENSBURG – Today is the deadline for entries in the children’s coloring contest that will be held in conjunction with PotatoFest.

Children 12 and younger may submit a coloring page to the borough office, 300 W. High St., by today. Two age categories will be judged: 7 and younger, and 8 to 12.

One winner will be selected in each age category and will win a pizza and PotatoFest T-shirt.

The coloring page can be downloaded from potatofest.com or picked up at the borough office.

PotatoFest will be held Sept. 26 in downtown Ebensburg.



N. Cambria to choose Little Miss, Mister

NORTHERN CAMBRIA – The borough’s Christmas Parade Committee will hold its first Little Miss and Mister Harvest Pageant from 4 to

8 p.m. Oct. 12.

Photos of contestants must be turned in to the borough office by Sept. 25.

The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There is also a drop-off box at the back of the borough building.



Municipalities agree to share police dog

EBENSBURG – Alli, Cambria Township’s police dog, will be used in Sankertown if needed, under terms of an intergovernmental cooperation agreement approved this week by the supervisors.

James McGough, Alli’s handler, is a police officer in the township and a part-time officer in Sankertown.

The agreement will be on a month-to-month basis, and each jurisdiction will maintain insurance.

The township purchased the police dog last year with a donation from Dan and Fran Decker of Decker Diamond Jewelers on Jamesway Road in the township. Since then, private donations of funds and services have helped with the dog’s expenses.

The Cambria-Sankertown agreement is effective immediately.



Job fair scheduled Wednesday

A Community Initiatives Job Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Hiram G. Andrews Center, 727 Goucher St., Upper Yoder Township.

Job seekers should be seated by 9 a.m.

Aponsored by Veterans Leadership Program/Veteran Community Initiatives, the event is open to everyone.

Businesses participating include SCI-Pine Grove, Martin-Baker America, UCP/Choices, PBS Coals, Baltimore Life Insurance, Safari Contract Cleaners and Cambria-Rowe Business College.

UPJ invites public to PITT-nic in park

Pitt-Johnstown will hold its third annual PITT-nic in the Park from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday in downtown Johnstown’s Central Park.

The community is invited to join in the celebration, which includes free hot dogs, refreshments, entertainment and prizes.
