In brief: City police investigating West End vandalism

The Tribune-Democrat

Johnstown police are asking the public’s help in finding those responsible for a rash of vandalism in the city’s West End.

Eleven people living on Fairfield and Esther avenues and Alexander Street reported having their vehicle tires slashed Thursday, police said.

Five residents on McFee Avenue also reported having flat tires.

Anyone with information on the vandalism is asked to call Cambria County non-emergency number at (800) 281-1680.

Charity football game will be held Sunday

The sixth annual Flood City Charity Bowl will be held at noon Sunday at Johnstown’s Point Stadium.

The Charity Bowl is subtitled Johnstown’s Businessperson’s Football Classic, because six years ago, 30 Johnstown business people got together to raise money in a charity flag football game for the Dylan’s Heart Fund.

Since that time, it has grown – it still features 30 local businessmen, and now 30 businesswomen in the second installment of the Ladies Game – and the stakes are higher.

The donation is now split between two local charities. This year, the charities are the Women’s Help Center and the Felix Family Adoption Foundation.

Conemaugh Health Systems has been a corporate sponsor for three years now and continues to be a viable partner in the game.

In addition, Memorial is holding free breast screenings from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Richland Care Center and from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Ebensburg Care Center. To schedule an appointment call the Conemaugh Nurse Connection at (800) 587-5875.

Altoona woman to stand trial in crash that killed three

PITTSBURGH – The driver of a car that slammed into a utility pole near Pittsburgh, killing three passengers, has been held for trial on homicide by vehicle charges.

Nineteen-year-old Kellyanne Strouse, of Altoona, waived her right to a preliminary hearing on Friday.

Police say Strouse was speeding on Aug. 4 in Forest Hills when her sedan hit the pole, nearly splitting the car in half.

Samuel McCoy of Altoona, Matthew Stojakovich of North Huntingdon and Jennifer Smith of Johnstown were killed.

Smith’s 4-year-old daughter broke her leg and arm.

Police say Strouse admitted using heroin earlier that day and her blood tested positive for opiates.

She’s also charged with aggravated assault and driving under the influence.
