In brief: Truck hauling 8 tons of hay overturns

The Tribune-Democrat

SALISBURY The Salisbury Volunteer Fire Department responded to an overturned trailer loaded with 8 tons – 480 bales – of hay at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The accident on Rock Station Road in Elk Lick Township closed the road for five hours while workers from Southside Salvage Inc. cleared away the debris.

State police in Somerset said a Ford pickup was towing the trailer when it overturned while negotiating a curve.

The driver, Herbert L. Engle, 45, of Garrett, faces a speeding charge, police said.

He was not injured.

Staff raises funds for soldier’s family

BLAIRSVILLE – Staff members in Blairsville-Saltsburg School District raised an undetermined amount of money Tuesday for the family of a soldier killed in Afghan-istan.

Staffers donated $5 each for the privilege of wearing jeans to work.

Proceeds will benefit the family of Army Staff Sgt. Glen H. Stivison Jr., 34, who graduated from Blairsville High School in 1994. He was one of four soldiers killed last week when their vehicle was struck by an improvised

explosive device in Kandahar province, the Defense Department said.

Stivison was living in Colorado with his wife, Eryn, and their sons, Blaze and Andrew, media reports said.
