Local United Way at 92 percent of goal

By anyone’s measure, accomplishing 92 percent of anything is pretty good.

That doesn’t mean the United Way of the Laurel Highlands is satisfied with having reached 92 percent of its goal for this year’s annual campaign.

That’s what the organization’s leadership noted Thursday during its last public update meeting where it projected it would raise $1.016 million of its $1.1 million goal.

Bill McKinney, president of the United Way of the Laurel Highlands, said it’s only going to take a little more help during the next four weeks to ensure that this year’s aggressive goal is met.

“We’re really trying to get the word out because we don’t want to give up on our agencies,” said McKinney, noting that donations have surpassed last year’s goal of

$1 million.

“We’re going to do everything we can to show the need of our 25 member agencies and make sure we have the funding for all of them.”

McKinney said the recent economic troubles being felt across the country serve as a double-edged sword for this year’s campaign. While tougher times make it harder for people to give to charities, the services of the United Way’s agencies are sure to be in an even greater demand.

“We know this is a tough time, but this is when we need the donations the most,” McKinney said.

“We know the need is going to rise for all of our agencies as more people are impacted by the troubled economy. We want to make sure we are there for them in 2009.”

The organization will give a report of its final campaign numbers on Dec. 20 at a Johnstown Chiefs game. Winners of the grand prizes, which include a new car, also will be drawn that evening.

McKinney said it’s not too late for individuals and other companies to give and become eligible for the grand prizes, which also include a large flat-screen television and an autographed Steelers 75th anniversary football. It only takes a contribution of $140 or more to be included in the drawing.
