An Adams Township man believed to have been traveling in excess of 80 mph ran another driver off the road Wednesday, then seconds later crashed his own vehicle, police said.
Damian E. Papinchak, 27, of Hurricane Lane, Salix was listed in critical condition Wednesday night at Memorial Medical Center.
Greg Simmons, 27, of Wilmore, driver of the vehicle Papinchak forced from the highway, was not injured, police said.
The incident occurred shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday in Summerhill Township.
Papinchak’s car went out of control on a curve south of Wilmore.
Summerhill Township police Chief Paul Bonfanti said Papinchak was traveling north on Route 53 toward Wilmore, when he passed Simmons’ vehicle – forcing it off the road – in his attempts to avoid a southbound vehicle.
Papinchak continued on Route 53 at apparent high speed for about 300 feet before he lost control, crossed into the southbound lane and traveled up a private driveway.
The vehicle continued 268 feet, rolling over a number of times before striking a tree, Bonfanti said.
Papinchak’s 1995 Toyota was heavily damaged. An investigation into the crash continues.
