Johnstown man pleads guilty to federal child porn charges

JOHNSTOWN — A Johnstown-area man charged with videotaping himself in sex acts with a young girl has pleaded guilty in federal court to producing child pornography.

Stephen J. Goniea, 47, of Crest Avenue, admitted producing recordings of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct over a three-year period beginning in 2008.

He could spend up to 30 years behind bars, U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton said.

Two other child pornography charges were dropped under the plea agreement.

Goniea (pronounced: gon-yay) is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 3 in U.S. District Court in Johnstown.

In May 2012, Goniea was charged with raping a child younger than 13 over a nearly six-year period. The investigation uncovered nearly 800 sex-related video recordings in Goniea’s home, police said at the time.

The state police Southwest Computer Crime Task Force and Stonycreek Township police conducted the investigation that led to Goniea’s arrest.

This week’s plea relates only to federal charges filed in the case.

Goniea also faces 54 counts of rape and dozens of other sex-related counts in Cambria County court. That trial has been continued for the May term of court, online court records show.
