Motorist dies in Route 403 crash

JOHNSTOWN — One person died in a one-vehicle crash Sunday on state Route 403 in West Taylor Township, authorities said.

Johnstown police Officer Erin Kabler said Mark Diaz, 42, was driving a Pontiac Grand Prix southbound when the vehicle crossed the center line and left the roadway before striking an embankment, a large boulder and a telephone pole.

The crash happened at 1:55 a.m. not far from the water treatment plant, he said.

The section of road has a 55 mph speed limit posted and speed was believed to be a factor, Kabler said.

Cambria County Deputy Coroner Pete Long said testing remained underway to determine Diaz’s cause of death.

He said the Seward area man’s vehicle caught fire after the crash occurred.

It is the second fatal wreck on that stretch of roadway in one month.

Charles Alt Jr., 44, of the Armagh area, died Dec. 14 after his 2000 Ford Windstar left the roadway between the water treatment plant and the Indiana County line and struck a tree.

He died at the scene, with speed and alcohol factors in the crash, police said at the time.
