In brief: Barbin-Rigby remains close after new count

EBENSBURG — Even with additional military and federal employee absentee ballots tallied Tuesday, the winning margin of incumbent state Rep. Bryan Barbin remains at 187 votes, the Cambria County election office reported.

The new total tally for Barbin, a Democrat, stands at 9,423, while Republican challenger Jim Rigby received 9,236 votes in the 71st Legislative District, election supervisor Fred R. Smith said.

EBENSBURG – Cambria County Historical Society will present “A Walk Through Wilmore” at 7 this evening at Central Cambria Middle School.

The slide presentation is by Mark Blaisdell, a Wilmore historian and manager of Wilmore Borough.

The program is free and open to the public.

Pa. author to read from works at UPJ

Author Kirk Nesset will read from his collection at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Pitt-Johnstown Living/Learning Center University Room.  

Nesset has written two books of stories, “Mr. Agreeable” and “Paradise Road; a nonfiction study, “The Stories of Raymond Carver”; a book of poems, “Saint X”; and a book of translations, “Alphabet of the World: Selected Works of Eugenio Montej.”

The event is being held as part of the Fall Reading Series and is sponsored by the Program in Creative and Professional Writing. The reading is free and open to the public.

Nesset is a professor of English and creative writing at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania. He was awarded the Drue Heinz Literature Prize in 2007.

Youth center plans overnight ‘lock-in’

NORTHERN CAMBRIA – Coal Country Hangout Youth Center will hold a “lock-in” for area youth ages 11-16 beginning at 7 p.m. Friday.

The overnight event at the center, 1102 Maple Ave., will be chaperoned by licensed adults, assisted by university students.  

Activities will include basketball, volleyball, billiards, interactive and board games. Two skits put on by the university students are planned.  

A showing of the Disney movie “The  Fox and the Hound” will be followed by a discussion of the relationships played out in the film.  

Release forms must be signed by a parent or guardian on arrival.

Reservations due for Chamber dinner

SOMERSET – The 70th annual Somerset County Chamber of Commerce dinner will be held Nov. 17 at Seven Springs Mountain Resort.

Social hour will be held from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7. There will be a cash bar throughout the evening.

The cost is $50 per person for members and $70 for nonmembers.
