Nurse to stand trial for endangerment in infant’s death

UNIONTOWN — An in-home nurse has been ordered to trial on a charge of child endangerment for allegedly not doing enough to help a baby who was born prematurely and died of respiratory distress while she was caring for him.

Defense attorney Christopher Capozzi argued at a hearing Wednesday that 42-year-old Jackie Sue Yeagley, of North Union, did nothing wrong and said the death of 7-month-old Derek Miskanin Jr. was a tragedy, not  a crime.

The boy died in the Uniontown Hospital emergency room on Dec. 4, 2011.

Yeagley contends ventilator alarms didn’t alert her to the boy’s condition, but Fayette County District Attorney Jack Heneks says the machine’s records show multiple alarms and disconnects during the hour before the boy died.
