CASA seeking volunteers

JOHNSTOWN — Cambria and Somerset counties’ Court Appointed Special Advocates, a program of Beginnings Inc., is looking for individuals interested in helping children who are victims of abuse or neglect.

Trained CASA volunteers are appointed by a judge to represent the best interests of a

child.

They are responsible for researching the background and situation of each case, speaking for the child in court and acting as an overseer for the duration of the case to make sure it is brought to an appropriate conclusion and the child is placed in a safe, permanent and nurturing home.

No special background or education is needed to become a CASA volunteer.

Volunteers must be at least 21 years old, complete the necessary background checks, complete 30 hours of training and be willing to commit to the CASA program until their first case is closed, which is usually 18 to 24 months.

Fall training dates are: 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 7, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 12, 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 14, 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 21, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 26, 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 28 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 2.

All classes will held at Beginnings Inc., 111 Market St. in downtown Johnstown.
