Children shopping tour ‘is what Christmas is about’

JOHNSTOWN — While it may be true that Santa has no equal when it comes to Christmas wish-filling, a group of area volunteers has been giving the jolly old elf a run for his money over the past half-century in Johnstown.

In what has become an area tradition, a former Jaycees group marked its 53rd year of the Needy Children’s Shopping Tour with more of the same Sunday night at The Galleria mall, taking area school-age pupils on a mini-shopping spree for new winter clothes and a visit with Santa.

A group of more than 100 volunteers took the area children through J.C. Penney, where they each were able to pick out $100 in clothes.

“There are so many kids in this area who don’t have warm clothes this winter ... so the idea is to give them a hand,” said Connie Hobbs, Needy Children’s Shopping Tour president.
