An Altoona man was jailed Tuesday after authorities said he had raped a woman at gunpoint in Cresson Township and then threatened to kill her family if she told anyone.
Township police said in a criminal complaint that Daniel Kenneth Markel, 23, of the 100 block of Logan Boulevard, texted the woman to pick him up at Logan Valley Mall on Monday.
During the drive, Markel pulled a gun and forced the woman to drive him onto old Route 22. From there, they drove into Allegheny Portage National Historic Site and stopped on a road near the summit picnic area, police said.
According to police, Markel raped the woman at gunpoint and told her: “I want to see you cry and beg for your life.”
He forced her to drive him back to the mall and threatened to kill her family if she told anyone, police said.
The woman left Markel at the mall and then drove to the Altoona Police Department.
She was treated at Altoona Regional Hospital.
Logan Township police picked up Markel, Cresson Township police said.
Markel is charged with rape, involuntary sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault, sexual assault, aggravated assault, indecent assault, simple assault, disorderly conduct and carrying a firearm without a license.
He was arraigned by on-call District Judge Charity Nileski of Cresson and sent to the Cambria County Prison after failing to post 10 percent of $50,000 bond.
