Law Day observance planned at St. Francis

LORETTO — The annual Red Mass/Law Day will be held April 26 at St. Francis University, Loretto.

Red Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Chapel at the John F. Kennedy Student Center, with Bishop Mark Bartchak of the Altoona-Johnstown Roman Catholic Diocese as celebrant and homilist.

Judge D. Brooks Smith of the U.S. Court of Appeals of Pennsylvania will give the keynote address at the luncheon that follows the Mass.

Bartchak was installed as bishop of the diocese in 2011.

He received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from St. Mark Seminary and Gannon University.

Bartchak also studied for the priesthood at Christ the King Seminary, receiving a master’s degree in theology.

He studied canon law at the Catholic University of America.

Smith previously was chief judge on the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.

He also served as administrative judge of the Blair County Courts, judge on the Court

of Common Pleas of Blair County and district attorney of Blair County.

During his earlier roles as assistant district attorney and special prosecutor, Smith conducted a grand jury investigation into organized criminal activity in central Pennsylvania.
