Fleeing suspect dies in river

PITTSBURGH – Police say a man fleeing police in Pittsburgh died after jumping into the Allegheny River to evade capture.

Authorities did not immediately release the name of the man who fled officers in a stolen car Wednesday night, sparking a pursuit through downtown Pittsburgh.

Investigators say the man drove the wrong way on one street before crashing into another car, then jumping over a wall and dropping a gun before jumping into the river. Rescue divers pulled the man from the water, but he was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police say they were pursuing the man’s car because it had been taken in a carjacking on Monday. Two other men were in the fleeing car.

Police say they’re trying to determine if those men were involved in the carjacking.
