Cambria County War Memorial Arena made a combined profit of slightly more than $8,000 from the Johnstown Tomahawks’ 2012-13 home games.
The 29 contests grossed almost $450,000 for the facility, according to information provided by the arena’s authority on Monday. After expenses were taken out, the bottom-line figure ended up at $8,254 for the North American Hockey League Tier II Junior A club’s inaugural campaign.
The team’s own finances are completely separate from the arena’s books.
“Looking at it from the positive side, it was in the black,” said Dean Gindlesperger, the authority’s chairman. “We didn’t lose any money. It wasn’t numbers that we’re satisfied with by any stretch. But, by the same token, this was all new to us. We’ve never had a junior team in here before, so we kind of said going into this, let’s get through this first year. It’s going to be a learning curve and see where we sit.”
Arena officials hope the report can be used to help improve profitability for next season.
“The Tomahawks and us both had a successful season,” said Tom Grenell, the arena’s acting general manager.
“We’ve identified a methodology that gets us to next season. We need to jointly grow the business, so that we can close the gap even further on the day-to-day expenses of the War Memorial Arena.”
The largest expense was $242,354 for food and beverages, which, as a department, netted more than $60,000.
The actual profit could be higher or lower because some expenses were estimated.
Tomahawks games accounted for 70.7 percent of the events held at the facility from late September until early April. Therefore, arena officials attributed 70.7 percent of box office costs to the team, along with approximately 35 percent of operational costs and increased utility bills. That left the War Memorial with $36,700 before deducting
10 percent of the annual salaries paid to arena staff as game-day expenses, leaving the $8,254 total.
