NEW – Tractor-trailer hits bridge on I-70 in western Pa.

BELLE VERNON — Westbound traffic is moving slowly on a stretch of Interstate 70 in southwestern Pennsylvania, after a tractor trailer hit part of a bridge support over the Monongahela River.

State police in Belle Vernon say the right westbound lane is closed while emergency crews respond to the crash on the Speers Bridge. Fuel or some other liquid may be leaking from the truck and even into the river below, so cleanup is expected to take a while.

So far, traffic is not being detoured, though westbound vehicles are moving much more slowly than normal near the Belle Vernon exchange, about 25 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

Police have yet to release the name of the driver or say how badly the truck or bridge has been damaged.
